True Freedom

According to Yehuda Avner’s essential book The Prime Ministers Menecham Begin unapologetic informed Lord Carrington, one of the anti-Semites in the Thatcher government, that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel thousands of years before London was created. He then stood his ground against the suicidal demands of those “enlightened” masters of Israel, knowing that the Jews always stand alone. Prime Minister Begin did what he thought was right for his country and for his extended family of Jews no matter the strength of the enemy, the sentiments of popular journalists, or the lies perpetuated by political foes. So how is this story connected to Chanukah and the United States?

Chanukah is the story of the believers, the supporters of Judaism, against the strongest army in the world and the miracle that we still celebrate today. Unfortunately, just as so many years ago, we have Jewish Americans that would rather be part of a popular culture that condones the disintegration of families. At the time of the Maccabee revolt homosexuality was the norm, with Jews choosing to glorify their bodies instead of HaShem. How is that different today when we normalize abortions, premarital sex, homosexuality, and one parent families?

The other day a welfare queen proudly spewed the list of benefits our taxes pay for so that she can have children, sit home everyday and smoke weed. Instead of reclaiming our country we wring our hands and decry the violence of the “knockout” thuggery that is spreading to all our cities. Our representatives set up investigations on Fast and Furious and Benghazi that come to naught and the only people who ever get punished are the “little guys” while the real crooks, like Jon Corzine and his ilk, have the run of the country.

Years ago Henry David Thoreau’s essay ” Civil Disobedience” was a mandatory reading assignment for high school students. In it he states:

“Governments show thus how successfully men can be imposed upon, impose on themselves, for their own advantage. Yet this government never of itself furthered any enterprise, but by the alacrity with which it got out of its way. It does not keep the country free. It does not settle the West. It does not educate. The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way.”

I for one say it’s time for true American civil disobedience. Just like Dr King rallied the American people to the plight of blacks in the South by the laws written by Democrats, it is time to take a stand about the plight of all Americans. It is time for Christians and Jews to stand together and say enough. As Rabbi Hillel said so many years ago, ” If not now, when?”
